Yes, it goes back to the stumblingblocks set in place to deter them from really knowing God that the Pharisees set before them to discourage them by what I would call religiosity or tradition yet they plotted to kill Christ to keep their power and influence when God's followers left the temple to follow him. They're willing to make a big deal about washing hands or something like that or eating corn from the field on the Sabbath, when they refused to purify their hearts and they really didn't know God at all. They set their face against him and rejected him by abandoning the first commandment, thou shalt love the Lord your God and have no other gods before him. Like Nimrod, Egypt, Cush, and others, they were gods unto themselves. They were unwilling to submit and give up their power to serve the living God. They would make it hard on the lay person, yet do despicable things themselves.
